After a little time off for the holidays and the start of the spring school semester the South Carolina AAAAA State Champions came to Fuddruckers in Spartanburg to receive “THE ONLY TROPHY YOU CAN EAT” the World’s Greatest Hamburger at Fuddruckers.
Just under 100 players, coaches and support staff enjoyed the meal on Wednesday February 9th.
The Palmetto Sports Network which broadcasts the Greenville Tech High School Scoreboard every Friday night during the football season has honored the team of the year with a special celebration meal after each of the last 20 high school seasons.
During the year the Fuddruckers Top-10 keeps track of the top teams in the Palmetto Sports Network coverage area.
Gaffney began the season behind the 2020 defending state champions, but moved up in the poll to claim the top spot with their win in the AAAAA Championship game.
The Indians came back from a 19-7 deficit in the second half to score the winning points and then hold off Dutch Fork to claim a 22-19 victory.
The Indians took the lead for the first time with just over 3 minutes left in the game Grayson Loftis found Suga Jefferies on a deep post for a 40 yard touchdown.
The Indians added a two point conversion to go up by the final score of 22-19
It was the second bomb connection between Loftis and Jefferies in the game. The two connected on a 47 yard touchdown in the first half.
The Gaffney defense closed out the win ending Dutch Fork’s run of five straight state titles and a 62 game winning streak that began in 2015.
Ironically, the last state championship for the Indians was in 2012 and the team they beat for the title was Dutch Fork.
Last year the AAA State Champions from Daniel High School was the Palmetto Sports Network Team of the Year. Gaffney’s win over what had been an unbeatable team from Dutch Fork gave the Indians the nod for team of the year over the Lions who repeated as undefeated AAA State Champions.
At the end of the year the top team does not receive a trophy instead they enjoy something better, a championship meal at Fuddruckers.
Special thanks to the team at Fuddruckers that makes this possible. Lee Ann Johnston, Benji Wilson, Jan Johnson and Spartanburg Fuddruckers’ General Manager Nang.
